In less than a week, I ran Boston and the Country Music Half. This week has been dedicated to boring recovery…blah, blah, blah. It’s not my favorite, but it’s necessary.
Sunday:
Other than feeling heavy and slow, my body felt good after the CMM half, so I did a 1 hour recovery jog on the treadmill. If you can’t tell, I bought the entire Boston expo!
How I feel in my new gym clothes…
We spent the rest of the day at my Gran’s house…so good for my spirit. The only picture I took was of her biscuits in a cast iron pan. You can see where my brain was AND my Gran had homemade pear preserves!
Sunday night wisdom from Maya Angelou…
Monday:
8 treadmill miles followed by a green smoothie!
T-shirt du jour…Coffee doesn’t ask silly questions. Coffee understands.
And, I made a new honey-lime, sweet potato and black bean taco salad recipe…so good!!
Tuesday:
It felt so weird to not join my friends for track Tuesday, but my legs definitely aren’t ready yet. I did, however, enjoy an empty gym!
I always love everyone else’s Transformation Tuesday posts on Instagram. I jumped in the game this week.
First marathon. 5 years ago. 5+ hour finish
Boston 2015. 3:38 finish. I never in my wildest dreams thought this would be possible.
After the gym, I baked a batch of cookies for thank-you gifts. This might be my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe ever!! I will share asap!
I had a much needed haircut and highlights. I have a little patch of grays that needed to be covered up!
With my new hair, I put on some make-up and real clothes and met up with girlfriends to catch up!
Do you get into a rut of wearing run clothes more than “real” clothes? I am SO guilty of this one!
Do you have a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe? Share the link!
Have you started getting gray hairs? What age did you start to notice them and do you color your hair?
Do you look forward to working out when you have new run clothes?

I just love your blog. Your so real and inspiring. I live in running clothes and actually justify some of them as going out clothes if they were extra cute:) I loved your transformation Tuesday. I need to shave 5 minutes off my time to BQ. I long for the day, I can do that. Thanks for sharing!

5 minutes is definitely doable!!! And, I have run clothes and then nicer run clothes that I’ll put on for errands…they’re just so comfy!

Jen, you are amazing! Already back to running. I took three days off with plenty of stretching. 🙂 your hair looks fab! And yes to the run clothes rut. Errrrrday lol when I do get dressed up I’m like what?! I look good hahaha I don’t really bake cookies….maybe I should change this. My poor family is neglected. 😛

Between all the running I do and teaching yoga I am almost always in workout clothes. I love any day that I am able to wear “real clothes” and feel clean all day!

Yes, if I didn’t have to dress up for work (which I have been known to get away with wearing Oiselle or Lulu at work), then I would likely only wear run clothes or pajamas (which are basically run clothes).
I have never colored my hair before and I’m kind of scared to! I think I noticed my first gray in third grade. I’m not even joking. It’s getting to the point where there’s too many that I’m going to have to start covering them up!
Yes, I love being able to work out in new run clothes! That’s the best! The first year I ran Boston I think I bought everything at the expo too!

I basically always wear running clothes, so it is pretty much a lifestyle for me and not a rut :)!I LOVE getting new running clothes and it definitely makes me want to run :).
I think I have a few gray hairs here and there (not really noticeable yet) and I have never colored or even highlighted my hair

Great post! I too am guilty of wearing more running clothes than normal clothes, oops!! And when I do wear normal clothes, everyone asks why I’m all dressed up! Haha!
I started getting gray hairs about 2 years ago which makes me sad since my husband doesn’t have any and is 5 years older than me😔. I’m going to blame it on my 3 kids😉!
Those cookies look delish! I found a great recipe that is my go to on Pinterest for Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies. They are amazing!! Happy Wednesday!!

I am really struggling with the whole ” normal clothes” thing right now. You are not alone:) I just stopped by Fleet Feet last night and picked up this super cute tank! http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/dri-fit-knit-running-tank-top/pid-10264538/pgid-10265300.
You should give this recipe a try- they are SO delicious but very sweet and they’re almost like “mini cakes”. I typically cut them in half but people love them! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/237424211575255497/
Question for you! I will be in Nashville for a week in June for a conference. Staying at the Gaylord Opryland Resort. I will be training for Chicago at that point..any trails/running route recommendations?? Phew- sorry for the long post…thanks Jen!

I love that tank…thanks!! And, those cookies look amazing!!! THere is a greenway that runs by your hotel. I think it’s called the Stones River Greenway. If you can’t find anything about it, let me know and I’ll try to find more specifics for you. 🙂

I’ve definitely got some gray! Sometimes I use a semi-permanent color, but I’m trying to embrace it!
I got into Chicago yesterday, and was super-excited, but my friend did not, so we’re going to look for another one. Always another race, but friends to train with are harder to find!
Nestle Toll House recipe. Can’t go wrong.

I immediately change into my lulu wonder unders and a hoodie the second I get home from work. I’m even guilty of wearing my running tights out at night. If I put on jeans my boyfriend usually wonders what the occasion is. Haha.
And I am 100% convinced I run faster in new clothes, especially new sneakers 🙂

Yes, gray hairs. I have about 5 LONG white/gray hairs at the crown of my head. They ‘sparkle’ yet… this morning I am going to get them ‘covered’ over. LOL. I am 34! No time for gray hairs. 🙂
And… chocolate chip cookies… favorite recipe? All of them! Yes please! 🙂

I’m starting to get a few gray hairs…eek! I just noticed them within the last few months when I went a little too long between highlights. I’m 30 – can’t believe I’m already going gray!
Also, if I ever get to run Boston, I will buy out the entire expo, too!

My favourite chocolate chip cookie recipe is the one of the back of the MILK chocolate chips Chipits bag. Gotta be the milk chocolate ones though. I loooove your hair. Mine is so…opposite lol. Yes, I have greys. I probably started getting a few here or there in my early thirties but ever since I had Callum a year ago, it’s like the greys got together every Friday night to breed. Now there’s a colony.

Bahaha! You make my morning every time I read one of you posts Jen! They always leave me with a smile. Super Fly on the treadmill was so hilarious 😛 and my clothing wardrobe has 3 speeds: 1) scrubs 2) running attire 3) suit and tie … with a couple casual outfits on the side. Typically my running warm-ups win out. I declare I’ll still opt for running warm-ups when I’m 90 ha! New workout clothes make me feel all yummy 🙂 Hang in there chica! Your recovery period is almost over 😉

Ha – mind reader! I have been craving chocolate chip cookies so great idea to post YOUR recipe soon 🙂 I’ll also look at other readers’ links. My favorite chocolate chip recipe so far is from the Skinny B***h recipe book. They use coconut oil which makes the cookies very tasty. (i could not find any “official” internet links to the exact recipe. I found one that shows canola oil but the book definitely says coconut oil and that is what, in my opinion, makes them extra tasty!).
Beautiful pic of your new hair with makeup and love that blue/white shirt.
Happy and pleasant recovery to you!

Running clothes is way more comfortable than any clothes. I feel like my work clothes are like wearing cardboard compared to my running stuff. augh. the struggle. lol
and your haircut looks so great.! I wish I had blonde hair so I could dye it. black hair isn’t so great for dying.

Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for a little while now, and just love it! You are so positive and have such a great writing style.
-I am constantly in running clothes if I’m not in scrubs, haha rough life huh?! I am currently sporting a “Boston Strong” v-neck and cotton capri’s. I’ve never been to Boston, but my sister in law lives in MA and sent our family t-shirts after the 2013 marathon. I LOVE all your Boston attire!!
-I dye my hair FOR Sure!! 🙂
Have a fabulous day!

I love your blog AND your hair! Every recipe I’ve tried has been great. I am sure the cookies will not disappoint! I agree with what you said about baking=love, I try to bake once a week for my family. Thank you for your transformation picture, it gives me hope. I missed BQ last year by 2 min 28 sec…ugh! I am trying again this weekend. Rather than even pacing for my qualifying time (last year’s strategy), I am going to take a risk and pace myself for 5 minutes under and hope this gives me cushion to factor in fade. Any advice is appreciated!!

Good luck racing this weekend!!! I paced to run under my BQ. It worked for me…especially because I always run like a half mile extra during marathons!

Hi Jen, So quick question for you. I just confirmed my registration for the Chicago marathon in October (kind of geeking about it) and I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row (nutrition, training plan, massage 🙂 ) I know you said you went every so often for a massage during your training. My husband and I usually do a couples massage once every few months but was thinking of going more once training really picked up. If you don’t mind me asking, how often did you go and did you do regular massage or deep tissue? Thanks so much!!!
Best Wishes, Colby

Jen, I’m so glad that you are taking it easy on yourself this week; I know it’s got to be difficult (no Track Tuesday?!? GAH!), and you’re doing GREAT! I sort of wish I could figure out a way to wear running clothes to work and still look professional – ha! 😉 Why do we need “real” clothes, anyway? I have what I call my “skunk patch” on the back of my head; it’s been there since my early 20s and, luckily, my hair is really thick and only my hairdresser knows about it. 😉 Hope you’re having a great day!

Jen, your Transformation Tuesday was exactly what I needed!
I am training for my first marathon [10 weeks to go – eep!] and was starting to get really down about my 5 hour goal time. I follow a bunch of runners on Instagram and they all seem so quick! It was refreshing to see that you, as I’m sure most of them did, started out just like “us” with your first marathon.
I am psyched to complete this marathon, whatever the time might be, and then to shaving time off my PB at each marathon that follows.
Thank you! xx

I think the goal for everyone’s first marathon should be completion! Finishing your first is a huge accomplishment…make sure you celebrate that no matter what your finish time!!!
