My legs were super heavy.  I could really tell that I ran a 50k 10 days ago.  I managed to hit most of my splits, but it was a LOT harder than it should have been.

I couldn’t wait to shower and put on my Pro Compression socks!!!!  I don’t run in compression socks, but I LOVE them for recovery!  They’re like a hug for tired, sore legs.

Our Dirtbags trail mixer was cancelled because of storms, so we decided to take an Orange Theory Fitness class.  It kicked my arse (11% incline at 9mph!!!), but I had a blast!

Charlotte update:  Thanks to everyone for your kind words and prayers!!  Charlotte has been suffering from facial paralysis.  She had an MRI this week and we discovered that she has an inner ear disorder that has caused fluid build-up and nerve damage.  We can’t correct the paralysis, but we can drain the fluid and prevent any further damage.  It’s great news!!

Corrie’s 30 and My Race Goals

This seemed like an appropriate Friday post on my Instagram!

I met up with the birthday girl for a 3.0 mile shakeout run to kickoff her 30th birthday!

We joined our husbands for breakfast at Syrup.  I had the creme brûlée oatmeal with berries…yum!

Denver has the second largest REI and it was within walking distance of our hotel.  We had to visit!

I had a sweet tooth so we stopped by Milkbox.  I had the most delicious vegan rocky road ice cream!

Then we just chilled in the room for the afternoon.  A) We needed to rest a little for Saturday’s race.  B) The altitude has left me feeling really nauseous.

The rest of our crew made it into town and we all got together for dinner!!  I love these friends so much and I’m so excited to have this adventure with them!

We have a 1 hour drive to Pine, Colorado in the morning, so I made sure to lay everything out the night before.  Basically it’s lots of Cocogo, Picky Bars, Gu, Banana bread for breakfast, extra Swiftwick socks, Garmin 620, and dry clothes for the finish.  I’m only doing one drop bag, but I get the chance to use it twice on the course.

My Goals for the North Fork 50k:

  • Stick with Corrie for her first ultra.  She chose this race to celebrate her birthday and run her first 50k.  It’s all about her!
  • Run my first race at altitude.  I’ve always struggled with altitude sickness during ski trips.  Running a 50k should be a challenge, but I’m excited to see how it goes.
  • No vomiting during the race.  Anyone that has suffered from altitude sickness knows this struggle.
  • Enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
  • Have fun!!
  • Our group has agreed to not set a finish time goal.  It’s all about the adventure with friends!

I skipped the cool down to take Charlotte to the vet.  (Just a little update: We met with a neurologist and she goes back for an MRI next week.  Thank you SO much for all of your sweet words and prayers.)

I was out running errands and had to make a deposit at the bank.  I will forever be loyal to my bank because they give out warm cookies!!!!  (It’s completely normal to make financial decisions based on cookies.)

I met up with Kate, Jenn, and Corrie for a run through Percy Warner Park.  Ollie, Kate’s pup, joined us, too!!!

I stopped by the Juice Bar for a smoothie after our run.

I always get the same green smoothie, but my friend Gail rave’s about the Cocoa Banana.  I tried it today and it was the bomb.com!!!

I’m about to leave for Denver to run the North Fork 50…eek!!!  I’ve always struggled with altitude sickness, and this will be my first race at such a high altitude.  Everyone’s advice is to hydrate!  Peach infused water has been my jam!

You know what else is my jam?   Coconut Aminos.  I’ve been subbing it for soy sauce lately and love it!  Jason had a work dinner, so I had a avocado rolls! It has 65% less sodium and just a hint of sweetness.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Saturday:

This seemed like an appropriate Instagram post as I was heading out to the trails for a 5 hour long run!

I made sure to lay every thing out the night before.  Pre-run was 1 cup of coffee and half a Picky Bar.  During my run, I ended up drinking around 50oz of water with Cocogo (Discount code: JENCHOOSESJOY (all caps), 3 Gu’s, and half a Picky Bar during my run.  My goal was 100 calories per hour.

It takes a village!  We picked up and dropped off friends throughout the 5 hour run.  I am so grateful for the awesome company.  It was super hot and humid, but we had a great run and the time flew by.  4,000ft gain!

After a much needed shower, I put on compression sleeves and drank my favorite Svelte protein shake.

And had the prettiest bowl of steel cut oats for breakfast…aka lunch because it was so late when we finished running.

I woke up feeling surprisingly good after my long run, so I headed to the gym.  An empty gym is such a luxury!!

Weekend Wrap-Up: Franklin Half Marathon

Saturday:

The Franklin Half Marathon (that’s actually run in Leiper’s Fork)

It was a steamy morning with lots of fog.  This is the parking field.

It’s a local race and so fun to meet up with my friends!

This definitely wasn’t a “goal” race for me and I used it as part of my training for the North Fork 50 later this month.  There was a little congestion at the start and it quickly thinned out.

This course is notoriously hot and hilly.  Every year I wonder why we run it!  I was soaked in sweat by the finish.

Nutrition:

  • Coffee and a Picky Bar at home.

Pros:

  • It’s a local race with lots of friends!
  • It’s close to home, 2,000 runners, and logistically very easy.
  • Water-Bags on the course.
  • Encouraging and cheerful volunteers
  • Peach Truck Peaches at the finish line!

Cons:

  • It’s hot and hilly.  Seriously, did I mention that it’s hot and hilly?
  • Because of the heat, they ran out of water at finish.
  • The porta potty lines were super long and folks resorted to peeing in the fields.
  • No towels or napkins at the finish.

That afternoon, I was a bum.  I made a big misto and watched McFarland (loved it)!

My ultra training called for back-to-back runs, so I met Corrie and CB at Percy Warner for a trail run!

Before our dinner reservation, we stopped to visit with sweet friends.  It’s always fun to see runners in “real clothes!” (Plus a photobomb by Mr. Huffman!)
